Region Alert's Tajikistan Daily Sitrep assesses the Region Alert Threat Index at CRITICAL as of June 29, 2026. On June 28, a CRITICAL magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Jurm, Afghanistan, approximately 193 km from the Muminabad operating area. Tremors were strongly felt across Tajikistan, necessitating immediate structural assessments of all NGO facilities, particularly vulnerable mud-brick structures. This seismic event follows a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in the same region on June 23. Security along the Tajik-Afghan border (~40km from Muminabad) remains highly volatile. On June 26, the CSTO declared the border situation 'complicated' and announced plans to neutralize militant threats in northern Afghanistan. Concurrently, a Taliban commander threatened an uprising in the neighboring Afghan province of Badakhshan, increasing the risk of cross-border spillover. Regional stability is further threatened by escalating US-Iran tensions. On June 27, reports indicated Iran struck US military positions in the Middle East following a breakdown in Swiss-mediated talks. This conflict threatens regional airspace, potentially disrupting commercial flight routes and evacuation logistics out of Dushanbe's international airport.
