On March 3, the IFRC launched a 9.6 million CHF emergency appeal to combat severe food insecurity in Cameroon, exacerbated by a 10-25% food price spike in conflict zones. On March 2, a wave of murders in the coastal hub of Kribi raised severe security concerns for local operations. This follows the February 27 foundation stone laying for a new 32,000-tonne Samen Industry cocoa processing plant in Baré-Bakem, and the February 26 launch of the €795 million Kribi Port Industrial Zone. In the Far North, a fire ravaged the Kolofata refugee camp on February 28, following a repelled Boko Haram attack on the Bargaram military base on February 26 that left 5 militants dead. Logistics in Douala remain strained after a deadly tanker explosion in the Yassa industrial suburb on February 27, though the BGFT's February 26 digitization of the Douala-N'Djamena freight corridor aims to ease long-term bottlenecks. The Douala port scanning dispute showed signs of resolution as GECAM announced a gradual return to normal operations on February 27 following the reinstatement of SGS scanning. ONCC data for March 3 shows cocoa FOB prices at 1,521 FCFA/kg, remaining at an unprecedented discount to Robusta coffee (FOB 2,074 FCFA/kg). Unverified local reports from late February suggest farmgate prices have plummeted to 750-800 FCFA/kg. This price collapse coincides with critical Black Pod disease conditions in the South and Southwest regions, where peak humidity reached 94% and 89% respectively over the past five days (February 26-March 2). With Ivory Coast advancing its mid-crop to March 1 to lower farmgate prices to 800-1,000 CFA, and Ghanaian buyers facing a $750 million debt crisis, the regional pricing floor is collapsing, heavily altering cross-border smuggling incentives while farmers struggle to afford necessary fungicides.
