Tajikistan Security Situation Report 2026

The security environment in Khatlon Province remains ELEVATED due to severe weather hazards and regional geopolitical instability. On March 12, the Ministry of Transport issued severe mudflow and avalanche warnings for mountainous regions, directly threatening the Muminabad-Kulob road corridor. Heavy rainfall of 16.1mm in Muminabad significantly increases the risk of localized flooding and road washouts. Regional tensions continue to escalate following the US-Israel conflict with Iran, impacting Tajikistan's economy and logistics. On March 12, the National Bank of Tajikistan reported the Somoni is under pressure against the US Dollar due to the conflict. Additionally, on March 12, a Russian military court sentenced 15 Tajik nationals to life in prison for the 2024 Crocus City Hall attack, which may trigger increased domestic surveillance of religious groups. Border security remains a critical focus. On March 11, China announced a $50 million project to construct nine new border outposts along the Tajik-Afghan border. Furthermore, on March 12, authorities arrested seven smugglers attempting to move 100kg of narcotics from Afghanistan into Tajikistan. NGO staff should maintain a low profile and avoid the Nizhniy Pyanj border area.
