Kolwezi Cobalt Tracker: Security, Regulation and Export Status
The Democratic Republic of Congo supplies roughly three quarters of the world's mined cobalt, and Kolwezi is the centre of it. This tracker carries what changed on the ground there, and what it means if you buy, finance or operate on the Copperbelt.
Current assessment. Region Alert rates Kolwezi ELEVATED for the week to 28 July 2026. Three things drive it. Gang violence shut down two city neighbourhoods on 25 July. Every mining company faced a 31 July deadline to hand 10 percent of its capital to Congolese nationals. And the subcontracting regulator ran compliance inspections at operator level. Export corridors stayed open through the week.
What changed this week
Each entry below is drawn from Region Alert's Copperbelt brief for the week ending 28 July 2026. Figures are as assessed on that date.
Export corridor status
| Route | Status at 28 Jul 2026 | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Kasumbalesa border | Open | Operational through the week. Three bodies were found in Kasumbalesa neighbourhoods over the period, and local human rights monitors raised concern about urban crime in the border town. |
| Lobito corridor | Open | The DRC approved a public-private partnership with Mota-Engil to rehabilitate the Dilolo to Kolwezi rail section. |
| Durban and Dar es Salaam | Normal | Both corridor ports operating normally. |
| Lualaba road network | Caution | Fatal overloading crash near Lubudi on 25 July. Chronic speed and overload risk on the descents. |
Conditions around the operations
| Factor | Assessment at 28 Jul 2026 |
|---|---|
| Strike risk | Moderate. Grievances elevated across the Copperbelt, driven by power cuts and resettlement disputes. |
| Artisanal mining | About 5,000 creuseurs relocating to the Kasulo zone. A new commission will organise formal cooperative assignments in Haut-Katanga and Lualaba. |
| Power | Load shedding continuing. Protests in Kipushi. The regional transmission fix has lost a commercial partner. |
| Water and air | Drinking water shortages reported in the Crete cell of Kolwezi. Air quality in Lubumbashi deteriorated between 16 and 23 July. A civil society group called for an investigation into industrial pollution of a local river. |
| Season | Dry season, May to October. Good for tailings reclamation and road logistics. Dust warning in effect. |
What we are watching next
Region Alert would move Kolwezi down from ELEVATED after 14 consecutive days with no violent gang clashes in the city communes. Three questions decide the next assessment:
- Is the 10 percent ownership decree enforced without exemptions?
- Did the 31 July community mobilisation at the COMUS barrier stay peaceful?
- Is the ordered military withdrawal from mining sites actually completed?
Frequently asked questions
Where is Kolwezi and why does it matter for cobalt?
Kolwezi is the capital of Lualaba province in the south of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The DRC supplies roughly three quarters of the world's mined cobalt, and Kolwezi is the centre of that production. A large share of the country's output is mined or processed in the area. What happens in the city reaches battery and electronics supply chains within weeks.
What is the security situation in Kolwezi right now?
Region Alert assessed Kolwezi at ELEVATED for the week to 28 July 2026. Rival youth gangs fought in the Kanina and Hewa Bora neighbourhoods on 25 July, with gunfire, looting of shops on Sendwe Avenue and vehicles damaged. Police intervened. Residents and civil society have asked provincial authorities to reform the police and address youth unemployment.
What is the DRC 10 percent local ownership rule?
The Ministry of Mines set 31 July 2026 as the deadline for mining companies to transfer 10 percent of their capital to Congolese nationals, including 5 percent to employees. The requirement comes from the 2018 Mining Code and had not been enforced until now. It applies to every foreign-backed operator on the Copperbelt.
Are the Kolwezi export corridors open?
In the week to 28 July 2026 both the Kasumbalesa border crossing and the Lobito corridor were assessed as open. The DRC approved a public-private partnership with Mota-Engil to rehabilitate the Dilolo to Kolwezi rail section. Road safety is the larger risk. A copper truck overturned near Lubudi on 25 July, killing at least 13 people.
What is happening with artisanal miners near Kolwezi?
About 5,000 artisanal miners, known locally as creuseurs, are being moved to the Kasulo zone roughly 8 km from the Metalkol operation. On 27 July the Ministry of Mines set up a commission to organise formal assignments for artisanal cooperatives in Haut-Katanga and Lualaba. Community tension around the transition is high.
How does Kolwezi affect the critical minerals supply chain?
Cobalt and copper both sit on the United States critical minerals list. Because the DRC supplies roughly three quarters of mined cobalt, a disruption in Lualaba province moves the global critical minerals supply chain in a way that no other single location can. Ownership rules, road closures and community disputes in Kolwezi are supply events, not local news.
Does Region Alert cover the DRC every week?
Yes. Region Alert publishes a weekly Copperbelt brief covering Kolwezi, Lualaba and Haut-Katanga. It tracks security, regulation, community grievances, export corridors, power and water, and metal prices, with the operational consequence attached to each entry.
