On May 11, the French National Assembly adopted a resolution calling for targeted sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, and on May 13, the European Parliament suspended access for the pro-government Imedi TV. Regionally, tensions persist following the May 9 signing of a 'Treaty on Deepening Allied Cooperation' between Russia and South Ossetia, which Georgian officials and the Council of Europe have condemned as a step toward de facto annexation. Domestically, the Georgian Orthodox Church enthroned Shio III as the new Patriarch on May 12. On May 17, he delivered a speech supporting anti-LGBT legislation during the 'Family Purity Day' march, which caused significant, anticipated traffic disruptions in central Tbilisi. In a severe safety incident outside the capital, eight young people were killed in a high-speed car crash in Gardabani on May 14. For the Samgori school and international students, the convergence of aggressive protest policing and diplomatic fallout creates a complex operational environment. While the severe weather from May 15-16 has passed, the Up, impacting regional logistics. Students must strictly avoid standing on sidewalks near Parliament or government buildings to prevent arbitrary detention, and staff should monitor for potential administrative harassment targeting Western-aligned institutions as the government retaliates against European pressure.
